Some reasons why Minecraft isn’t on Steam

If you don’t know about the bestselling, award winning indie sensation Minecraft yet, then you probably spent a few years living under a very heavy, very broad rock.  But don’t worry!  If you’re like us, and rarely have time to leave your Steam store browser or library, you never would have noticed Minecraft’s celebrated existence in the first place.  But that’s the problem.  Minecraft isn’t on steam.

But why isn’t it on Steam?  Minecraft creator and developer Markus Persson a.k.a “Notch” recently posted on his blog a few of the reasons why he hasn’t taken his hit title to the mega online distributor we all know and love.

We are talking to Valve about this, but I definitely understand their reasons for wanting to control their platform. There’s a certain inherent incompatibility between what we want to do and what they want to do.

So there’s no big argument, we just don’t want to limit what we can do with Minecraft. Also, Steam is awesome. Much more awesome than certain other digital distribution platforms that we would NOT want to release Minecraft on.

The fact that Notch has always showed support for Valve and Steam nearly every chance he gets really makes the debate interesting. Can they come to an agreement?  Can Valve accommodate Notch’s ambitions?  Whatever the outcome, I’m pressing for a Minecraft/Half Life crossover, complete with Portal guns and Left 4 Dead zombies.
