Retro Game Wednesday – The Ultimate Doom

Did you know that the name Wednesday is of Pagan origin and we trace it back to the English god Wōden?

That’s right Heathens, it’s time once again for the next installment of Daniel Casey’s Retro Game Wednesday.

This week, DKC takes on The Ultimate Doom:

Modern gaming can get tiring. It’s full of choices, after all. Deep moral choices, or at least the illusion of them, seem to be the newest trend in video games. I can only be warned so many times by loading screens in Mass Effect 2 that my choices could have dire ramifications in Mass Effect 3 before I start to become a paranoid, shaking wreck, paralysed at every conversation option because everything is going to have wide ranging aftereffects.

So I don’t play Mass Effect 2 anymore. It’s just too much for me – I play video games to escape from the hard choices I make every day in real life about what I’m going to have for lunch…

Are you like me?  Did you get into PC gaming at the wrong time and did the Doom series pass you by?  Time to make amends. Check out the rest of Daniel’s review right here at Steam Addicts, Pagans.  And don’t eat the Pastrami – it’s off…

End of the road for Terraria

Sad news for Terraria fans, as its main developers have decided to move on.  This post on Terrara Online from Redigit pretty much says it all:

The future of Terraria has been highly debated as of late, not just with the community, but for us as well. The last year has been a crazy ride! When I started on this game, I just had a few ideas of what I thought would make a fun game. I had no idea that it would receive so much attention. I want to thank all of you for supporting us and making this game’s success possible.

After a lot of internal debate, we have decided that it is time to move on. My wife and I are due to have another boy soon, and I want to spend some time getting to know him. I also want to spend the time recharging and bettering myself as both a programmer and game designer. I have learned a lot from working on Terraria and plan on using what I’ve learned, building upon it, and moving forward with another, even better project. However, we are still planning at least one more bug fix for Terraria.

For those that haven’t already heard, Finn “Tiy” Brice has moved on to form Chucklefish and is heavily at work on an exciting new game called “Starbound”. It’s looking to be a lot of fun, so make sure to check it out if you haven’t already!

Thanks again for all your support, and I am very much looking forward to providing you with something much better than Terraria in the future!

Sorry fans.  It really was a good run though.  Hopefully both Redigit and Tiy will bring us some more great games in the not-too-distant future!

Daily Deal – Ceville

The mean cruel cold blooded tyrant Ceville ruthlessly rules the beautiful kingdom of Faeryanis. Or rather, he used to rule the beautiful kingdom of Faeryanis, until the brave people revolted against his regime and drove him out of the palace.

The kindhearted queen Gwendolyn did step up to reign over the land with a council of noble and wise advisors.. It seems that this story could end just like any other fairy tale: “And they lived happily ever after…” But no, that’s not quite right. Because another evil rises within the land. The treacherous Basilus — counsellor of Gwendolyn and of Ceville before her — plans to take the crown and torture the realm with the help of murderous beasts he has summoned from the planes of eternal darkness.

All seems lost! But hope resides with the one most unlikely person imaginable to save the kingdom and restore peace to the realm: Ceville, the realm’s former despotic ruler…

Ceville
The ancient ruler of Faeryanis and spare-time tyrant, is dreaming up evil plans to exact his revenge on his former counsellor and servant Basilus, who betrayed him.

Ambrosius
The noble and somewhat self-important knight Ambrosius is Ceville’s would-be-nemesis. He constantly attempts to capture Ceville — but usually with little success. Will they both team up to fight a greater evil?

Lilly
The gentle and kind girl Lilly is rather an improbable choice to team up with Ceville. Never the less she helps him to escape for the good of the realm (at least that’s what SHE thinks!)

This game will give you an impression of what happens, when you mix up the setting and humour of Shrek, Discworld and the Monkey Island series.

  • Up to three simultaniously playable characters with weird but loveable personalities
  • Bizarre characters from stock-broker dwarves and hippie-elves who populate the fairy-tale realm of Faeryanis
  • Various locations all over Faerynis, like the Not-So-Hidden druid circle, the (former) Elven Forest, The Dwarven Mines of Mount Goldmore and more! a variety of puzzles, many of which that can only be solved by teamwork of two (or more) player characters
  • Tons of humour

Buy Ceville today for $2.49 and save 75% off the regular price of $9.99.  Demo available.

Daily Deal – AI War: Fleet Command

Another blast from the past gets a second chance to be the Daily Deal:

“AI War breaks most of the genre’s rules. Which is precisely why it’s incredible… This out-of-the-blue one-man passion project is one of this year’s finest strategy games.” - PC Gamer UK Review, November 2009

“You are outgunned. You are massively outnumbered. You must win.” These are your orders.

Humanity has already fought its war against the machines — and lost. AI death squads stand watch over every planet and every wormhole, the few remaining human settlements are held captive in orbiting bubbles, and the AIs have turned their attention outward, away from the galaxy, to alien threats or opportunities unknown.

This inattention is our only hope: a small resistance, too insignificant even to be noticed by the AI central command, has survived. These are the forces you will command. The AI subcommanders will fight you to the death when they see you — but your glimmer of opportunity comes from quietly subduing those subcommanders without alerting central processing to the danger until it’s too late.

You do have a few things going in your favor. Your ships are much faster. You have safe AI routines to automate defenses and mining outposts. You have production techniques that can churn out fully-outfitted unmanned fighters in seconds. There will never be more than a few thousand of your ships versus tens of thousands of theirs, but through careful strategy you must somehow reach and destroy the heavily-guarded AI cores.

Go forth into the galaxy, steal AI technology, recapture those planets you must in order to achieve your ends, and save what remains of humanity. But draw too much attention to yourself, and the full might of the AI overlords will come crashing down.

Buy AI War: Fleet Command today for $3.39 and save 66% off the regular price of $9.99.  Includes a massive 234 Steam Achievements!

The Penny Arcade Report interviews Gabe Newell

PA Report is sporting a new interview with Gabe Newell, where he discusses consoles, wearable computers, and oh yes, even addresses the “What about Half-Life 3?” issue:

Now we’re talking about things like wearable computers and biofeedback and we’ve touched on Steam a little bit but there’s millions of people out there who are gnashing their teeth when they read this who just want to play Episode 3 or Left 4 Dead 3. Is there ever tension between all the different things that Valve is interested in doing?

Oh absolutely. We’re acutely aware of how much we annoy our fans and it’s pretty frustrating to us when we put them into that situation. We try to go as fast as we can and we try to pick the things that we think are going to be most valuable to our customers and if there’s some magic way we can get more work done in a day then we’d love to hear about it, but we recognize that it’s been a long time whereas we have so many games that people really love–Counterstrike, Half Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, not a whole lot of Ricochet enthusiasts out there, and at the same time we want to be making sure that those games and those stories and those characters are moving forward while also making sure that we don’t just get into terminal sequelitis.

But we’ve always somehow, you know, part of the reason that we backed off talking so much about what was happening in the future is that when we’ve done that in the past, you know, with Half Life 1 it was a year after we originally said it would be, Half Life 2 basically if you go and read the forum posts apparently took us fifty or sixty years to get done so we’re trying to be careful not to get people too excited and then have to go and disappoint them. So we’re sort of reacting in the other direction and saying “okay, well let’s have things a little more baked before we start getting people all excited about it.”

An excellent interview by PA that you’re not going to want to miss.  You can read the full article here.

You’ll probably also want to check out PA’s extremely comprehensive photo tour of Valve’s offices!
